Pre-1920s photo postcard of "Goat Gorge" which would later be renamed Ape Canyon because of a 1920s incident where several miners who camped near the mountain had an experience with 'large hairy apes' that attacked them at night in their cabin on the ESE side of the mountain. The next day they claimed they shot one in this canyon where it fell into the sharp ravine. This feature is on the ESE side of the volcano. Make no mistake the canyon which is in a rather inaccessible area is very dangerous and nearly an 800 foot drop on the rocky sharp ledges around it. The canyon is on the ESE edge of the Plains of Abraham near an extinct pointed lava dome. The canyon was created by a viscous dacite lava flow from the mountain thousands of years ago and has been eroded by the weather and other recent eruptive activities. A clear view of Mount Adams can also be seen from this area on the mountain. Goats love this area and can be seen in herds roaming the rocks around it. Just a beautiful area.
