Derived from scoffer and skeptic, Scoftic is a term coined by Roger Knights in 2003. He intended it as a way to characterize critics of the bigfoot phenomenon "who are far from fair-minded," those who employ what he described as “UNhealthy skepticism,” although the term is applicable in a broader sense.

Knights states, "A nutshell definition of scofticism would be 'scientism in disguise,' although that’s not quite accurate….Another thumbnail definition is 'a cranky skeptic.'"

Knights credits inspiration for the word to Marcello Truzzi who complained, when he resigned from CSICOP, that most people who call themselves skeptics are really scoffers.
