(Protocols) Size Referencing
(Courtesy of the Mid-America Bigfoot Research Center as part of their extensive listing of protocols.)
One of the more important aspects of Bigfoot Research is to do proper size referencing. Relicthief, a former MABRC member wrote about the importance of size referencing and because of this, we have made it into a protocol.
When taking photos of potential evidence, always include measurement devices, such as a tape measure, ruler or a track caliper.
See picture of track caliper. If none of these types of devices are available for measurement, items from your pocket can be used, such as a dollar bill, cigarette lighter, pack of cigarettes, etc. anything that a known measurement can be taken from.
Subject photos, there is a couple of things you need to do. First, before you take even one step from where you are, drop something between your feet. A golf ball or bean bag, wrapped in a bit of cloth with a tail on it. This gives you an exact location of where the photo was taken from. It is important, scuff the ground and put a quarter on the scuff, so anything works if you can find it again. By doing this it allows you to size reference the subject, relying on the surroundings and your memory just isn't good enough.
Another option, is to go to a lumber yard and buy a 6 foot dowel rod and make a hiking staff out of it, but take black tape and at every 1 foot on the staff, wrap some tape there. You now have a 6 foot tall measuring stick to place near objects to measure with.
